We realize that some of our guests have allergic reactions to down and/or feathers, and we want to assure you that we have you covered - literally. First and foremost, at your request, we will have your room made up with non-allergenic replacements for all of the down and feather products, assuring you of the quality sleep you need. BUT... Since we want everyone to experience our Mountain Feather Bed®, we went to great lengths to find the best quality product along with the best hypoallergenic conditioning process available. This means that the majority of allergy sufferers won't experience any allergic reaction when sleeping on our Mountain Feather Bed®.
The reason some people experience an allergic reaction to down/feathers is not due to the down/feathers themselves. Tiny dust mites and other allergens that cling to the natural fibre are responsible for the reaction, and with proper cleansing, conditioning, and testing, these allergens can be effectively removed, leaving only the very feather or down cluster to go into your bedding. The bedding we have chosen for our guests is nothing short of "super clean", and therefore unlikely to cause an allergic reaction.
All the components of the Mountain Feather Bed® have been certified hypoallergenic.
hy·po·al·ler·gen·ic - having little likelihood of causing an allergic response.

(wow, say that 5 times!)
The following is from Northern-Feather, the makers of our fine Mountain Feather Bed®.
Northern Feather has developed a conditioning process, which has been specially formulated to enhance the natural properties of down and feathers. To render the down and feather hypoallergenic, we combine washing, rinsing, steaming and de-dusting cycles with special soaps and conditioners.
This process also maximizes the fill power of down and feather, which increases the loft. If not properly conditioned, the ability of the down and feather to trap warm air is greatly reduced. Our conditioning process increases the potential of the down and feather to expand and retain air, providing an optimum amount of warmth.
The end result is a lightweight, hypoallergenic product you and your customers can enjoy.
If down and feathers are not properly conditioned, they lose their ability to trap warm air, creating lumps and cold spots in your Duvet. NF5 is Northern Feather's combined conditioning system and cleaning agent, specially formulated to enhance the natural properties of down, feathers and wool.
The first of its kind in Canada, NF5 allows natural fills to expand and retain air, absorbing an optimum amount of warmth. It also creates a hypoallergenic quality product.
NF5 means one good shake and your Northern Feather Duvet bounces right back to its fluffy, first-day freshness.
At Northern Feather, we're sticklers for cleanliness. All down and feathers that come through our British Columbia-based plant are cleaned and sanitized to consistent levels of quality above and beyond even government and industry standards. Nothing leaves our plant without the fill being thoroughly washed, de-dusted and conditioned. To further safeguard the quality of our products, all fills are put through extensive testing procedures in our in-house laboratory.
The government states that down products can have 5% residue. Residue is as anything that falls off the down when it is sorted, i.e. quill fragments, trash (dirt and dust) or foreign matter. Nowhere, however, does the Canadian government's cleanliness code ask for the turbidity and oxygen numbers of the down. These numbers measure the degree of cleanliness of the plumage.
A lot of oil sits in the down and feather that needs to be cleaned out. If you look at that down under the microscope you can see dust mites, small worms and little bugs - all the things that live on the birds before they're plucked. Nowhere does the Canadian government regulations say that the oil has to be cleaned out. It only states that you have to have 75% down cluster and 5% residue. Basically, what it comes down to is that the consumer is not protected. At Northern Feather, we make sure that all the oil is cleaned out.
Thanks to high-tech washing machinery and a state of the art laboratory at the Northern Feather plant, all fills are washed, rinsed, steamed, dried and tested in-house. If it passes NF's stringent cleanliness standards, it is dumped into holding tanks and blown directly into the sacks. Nothing is handled by hands.
The down is washed and rinsed with specific soaps and conditioners to make sure all dust mites are killed and dirt, dust and trash removed. Then it's steamed at a very high temperature. Samples are then taken to the lab for cleanliness tests.
The combination of oxygen number and turbidity equals supreme cleanliness. However, there are no standards for oxygen levels or turbidity in Canada. US standards state that feathers are required to have an oxygen number of less than 20 to be considered clean and under 4 to be super clean. As for turbidity, feathers normally require a minimum of 300 while anything over 500 is said to be super clean or dust free. Northern Feather's standard is 3.5 for oxygen and 550,the highest and cleanest for turbidity.
In order to achieve the oxygen number, we combine a small amount of distilled water with the feather and down into a jar. The jar is then tumbled in a high tech motorized machine at room temperature for a set amount of time and filtered through a very fine sieve. Chemicals are then added to the resulting solution until a pink color develops and persists for at least 60 seconds. The amount of chemicals used is then multiplied by a set number to give you the oxygen number. In general, the lower the oxygen number, the cleaner the product.
As for determining the turbidity, we again combine water with the feather and down and sling it through the motorized machine for a set amount of time. The solution is then filtered through a fine sieve and placed into a long, 550ml turbidity tube with an X marked on the bottom. If the lab technicians can clearly see the X across the bottom of the tube, it means the down has a turbidity of 550. If they can not see it, more solution is drained out until the X becomes visible. If it reads 450 or less, the down is put through our washing facilities and NF5 treatment for further cleaning and de-dusting. Now unlike the oxygen number, the higher the turbidity, the cleaner the product.
Rest assured when you buy a Northern Feather product, you're getting a thoroughly cleaned, quality product that has, literally, been put through the wringer.
